“Dr. Mike Milligan: I’ve known Tom for years and I’ve been one of Tom’s members for years. Tom has a unique story of his background. Tom, your company is 1000 Gems; Gems Insider Circle, but tell us a little bit about your history and how this all came about.
Dr. Tom Orent: In the beginning out of Dental school, I thought I knew everything I needed to know to become a great dentist and to have a great dental practice, so I tried to be the best dentist I could possibly be and went to all these clinical courses. Fifteen years into my practice, I found myself sitting in the office of a bankruptcy attorney wondering what happened Somewhere between dental school and bankruptcy court, I was AACD accredited, I served as an examiner for the AACD for six years, I went through all the Dawson courses and I did everything I thought you should do to get patients to beat a path to your door.
Was a Great Dentist, But Not The Greatest Business Person
“Clinically, I was in a good position as a dentist, but I was a train wreck as a business person. It all started to happen in October 1996, I was in the middle of a divorce, embezzled by my office manager, and there was no money. I was so far behind on everything. It wasn’t a pretty picture, but it got worse. I got a call from my divorce lawyer on Saturday, after the bankruptcy guy on Friday says you got to file Monday. The divorce guy who sent me to the bankruptcy guy said you can’t file. You can’t do it because you’re going to lose your house. Your wife’s attorney said they were going to motion to dissolve your house. So bankruptcy was not an option anymore and I had no money, so it was at that point, out of necessity, that 1000 Gems was born. I was my first client. I was my first member.
Then, in came a guy named Bob. Bob was an 80 year old, ex IRS guy who looked at my books and wondered how this happened. He said two things to me; ‘Tommy, how did this happen?’ and ‘Write me a check for $27,000 and I’ll help you fix it.’ This was funny because I didn’t have any money.”

Over a 3 year period I looked at over 50 different systems for my practice one at a time, month to month, system by system, and I saw what I wasn’t doing. I went to different courses and different gurus and a lot of it I just figured out on my own because I had to and after about 3 years, I retired my debt, and saved the building I almost lost. The divorce still happened, but we’re still really good friends. I like doing this and here I am. I call it 100 Gems because it’s all individual ideas. I like very easy little stuff, one at a time. If I can do it, anyone can.”
