Dr Charles Blair Talks About His Book “Coding With Confidence”

Dr. Mike Milligan: “We’re here at the ADA Meeting in Orlando, Florida and I have Dr. Charles Blair here from Charlotte, North Carolina here with me. Everyone has heard of Charles, but what you might not know is that he practiced for 10 years before he started helping us with all of our financials and all of that information. He’s got the new coding manual, a newsletter, and other things. Charles tell us a little bit about yourself and how this all got started, and how you can help us.

Strategies to Help Your Dental Practice Code Your Dental Procedures More Accurately

Dr. Blair: I practiced dentistry for about 10 years, and then I have been a consultant for about 25 years. Initially in the consulting, I worked in the tax and financial area. Also brokerage. For the last 7 to 8 years, I’ve been in the insurance coding area. What I have here, is I have my latest version of the Coding With Confidence manual that is very different. This book has content to it, narratives, strategies that type of thing.
Dr. Mike: My office is a user of this book. We purchase it I think a few years ago. It’s a fantastic help I can tell you that for sure.

Avoid Dental Insurance Coding Errors

Dr. Blair:Every office makes coding errors; it’s just a matter of how many. The money left of the table is amazing. There are about 500 codes. We find that the average dentist does about 93 procedures. The doctor who refers out does about 60 procedures. The doctor who is the decathlon doctor does about 120. So we have the influx of the PPO’s coming in, so one of the strategies is to try to minimize the PPO participation or to try to stay out. One way to do that is to have a wide variety of procedures. The wider your services, the better. I do some consulting with practices by phone as well. I’ve worked with around 4,000 practices on fees and coding. What we’ve found is that there are a lot of errors. A lot of money left on the table. The insurance companies will pay you if you code it correctly and this isn’t about doing anything incorrectly. So many dentists just don’t know how to code correctly. The typical office does not write the correct narrative, they don’t put the diagnosis down, and they would be paid in a lot of cases here. ”
